Meals

Below are typical foods from our standard menu that you can expect to eat during your climb: Breakfast: Eggs, sausages, bacon, French toast/pancakes, bread/toast, cereal/porridge, fruit. Margarine, jam, honey, peanut butter. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, fruit juice. Packed Lunch: Carrot and cucumber strips, avocado slices, boiled eggs, chicken, meat cutlets, sandwiches (egg, cheese, tomato, meat, tuna, or peanut butter), fruit. Meat sauce and bread. Dinner: Soup of the day, bread, salad, meat/chicken/fish, rice/pasta/potatoes, vegetables, lentils, fruit. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate Snacks: Peanuts, popcorn, crisps, cookies. Midnight Snack on Summit Night: Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, orange squash or soup It is also recommended that you bring some of your own trail snacks to eat, especially for your summit night. Anything lightweight and low-calorie is good, and energy or granola bars, chocolate, candy, cookies, crackers, nuts, and dried fruit are all popular choices. Be sure to choose things that you really like, because youโ€™ll need extra incentive to keep eating if you find your appetite decreasing at high altitude. Adding drink crystals such as Gatorade, Crystal Light, or Tang to one of your water bottles may also encourage you to consume extra fluids, and they often taste especially delicious on a hard day of hiking!

Itinerary of your trip Mt. Kilimanjaro Climbing - Marangu Route - 6 Days

  • Day 1 Day 1: Marangu Gate To Mandara Hut
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 1: Marangu Gate To Mandara Hut

Take a short drive from Moshi/Arusha town to the Kilimanjaro Park gate (1830 m), at the edge of Marangu - an attractive village with many small coffee and banana plantations. After completing the entrance formalities, climb up through the attractive and unspoiled forest to reach the clearing. Finally, reach the Mandara Hut (2700 m.). The volcanic remains of Maundi Crater are nearby and make a good afternoon excursion. An alternative is to rest and enjoy the beautiful forest. There is a rich birdlife at the huts and monkeys are often seen as well.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Mandara Hut To Horombo Hut
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 2: Mandara Hut To Horombo Hut

The first part of the walk is a steep ascent through the forest, but the path soon opens out into grassy moorland. Enjoy the views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Climb steadily through the moorland zone containing giant heather and occasional stands of groundsel, to eventually reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m.). Sunrise and sunsets here are stunning, the site is close to the glaciated dome of Kibo, and there is a real sense of being above the clouds.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Horombo Hut
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Horombo Hut

Day three is an acclimatization day. We suggest hiking all the way to Mawenzi Hut to allow for maximum acclimatization. The hike will increase your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak, and also reward you with magnificent views of Kibo. Return to Horombo for a late lunch. Spend the afternoon and evening relaxing at Horombo.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Horombo Hut- Kibo Hut
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Horombo Hut- Kibo Hut

Leave Horombo Hut after breakfast to hike through the moorland and alpine desert of Kilimanjaroโ€™s upper altitudes. After hiking for about an hour arrive at Maua River, a small mountain stream. After Maua, the terrain becomes flatter and the vegetation begins to disappear. Break for lunch at Middle Red Hill. After lunch, continue on a steady incline for another two hours through Kilimanjaroโ€™s Saddle. Although the environment on the way to Kibo is a bleak desert with little vegetation, you will see many stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Reach Kibo Hut around 3pm to rest and prepare for your midnight climb.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Kibo Hutto Summit To Horombo Hut
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: Kibo Hutto Summit To Horombo Hut

Around midnight, awake for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The hike begins with a demanding five hour hike to Gillmanโ€™s Point on the crater rim. Although this is considered to be the easiest of the three crater ascent paths, it is still extremely difficult. The first major rest stop, Williamโ€™s Point, lies at 5000 meters and is approximately a two hour hike Kibo Hut. Continue on for thirty minutes before beginning the rocky switchbacks that will continue to Gillmanโ€™s Point (5,681 meters).

The hike from Gilmanโ€™s to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately two hours. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Horombo Hut.

On the way down from the summit, you will see all of the magnificent views you could not see on the way up. Stop for a short break and snacks at Kibo Hut before continuing on to Horombo Hut. Reach Horombo Hut in the afternoon and enjoy your last night on the mountain.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Horombo Hut To Marangu Gate
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Horombo Hut To Marangu Gate

After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Marangu Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one, passing through Kilimanjaroโ€™s cloud forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery. Our vehicles will be waiting at Marangu Gate to take you back to Moshi.
