      Day 2: Alexandria Sightseeing

Cairo - Alexandria. Discover the port city of Alexandria today as we drive to the Mediterranean coast. Weโ€™ll explore the ancient Roman catacombs, the largest of its kind in Egypt. The catacombs were only rediscovered in 1900, when a donkey accidentally fell into the access shaft. Our tour will also visit Pompeyโ€™s Pillar and the impressive Library of Alexandria (exterior) before we arrive at the Citadel of Qaitbay. This fortress was built on the site of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse was destroyed by a powerful earthquake in 1323AD and some of the same stones recovered from the ruins were used in the construction of this famous citadel.

      Day 3: El Alamein

Alexandria - Cairo. Today we visit the sobering Commonwealth War Graves of El Alamein. Two bloody battles were fought here during the Second World War, which eventually saw the Allied forces defeat the Axis powers. This victory eliminated the threat to Egypt and the strategically important Suez Canal. Around 13,000 Allied soldiers were killed in battle. Weโ€™ll pay our respects to the fallen soldiers and explore the El Alamein Military Museum to learn more about the battles fought here. The museum also houses original war vehicles, weapons and uniforms. After the visit, we return to Cairo.
