Day 3: Flight To Bhutan And First Buddhist Monasteries

After breakfast, we head to the airport. The flight to Paro (2,280 m) is one of the most spectacular flight routes in the world - with views of the entire Himalayan range. The landing approach requires flying experience and good visibility, as the valley is particularly narrow. After the immigration formalities, we meet our local tour guide and drive to the hotel. In the afternoon we visit the Paro Dzong, called "Ripung Dzong" - the fortress. Built in 1646, the monastery fortress still houses the regional administration and the monks of the monastery. We then head to Kyichu Lhakang, one of the oldest and holiest temples in Bhutan. It was built in the 7th century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. Overnight stay in a hotel in Paro (F/M/A)

Day 4: From The Famous Tigerโ€™S Nest To The National Museum

On our second day in Bhutan, we visit the countryโ€™s cultural highlight. On a 5-hour hike (ascent and descent), we reach the world-famous Tigerโ€™s Nest. The Taktsang, a Buddhist monastery, "clings" to a rock face 900 meters above the Paro Valley. It is said that Guru Rinpoche, who spread Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas in the 8th century, flew there on a tiger. The climb is quite steep, but the monastery itself and the magnificent view are well worth it. In the afternoon, we stop at Ta Dzong, Bhutanโ€™s national museum, a fortified building from the 16th century, which has now been home to art and cultural objects for 50 years. Overnight stay in a hotel in Paro (F/M/A)

Day 5: First Day Trekking Tour: From Paro To Shana

The first day of trekking gets off to a leisurely start. We hike along the Paro Valley, following the meanders of the Paro River, past the Tigerโ€™s Nest, which we can admire from below today, past traditional farmhouses with cultivated fields: red rice, chili, potatoes and millet are the main staples here. After five hours, we reach Shana (2,860m), a small village at the far end of the Paro Valley. The camping crew has already prepared our campsite. Distance: 17 km, time approx. 5 hours. (F/M/A)

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Second Day Trekking Tour: From Shana To Soi Thangthangkha

We start early as we have our first longer stage ahead of us today. Our route takes us into the Jigme Dorji National Park. The Paro Valley becomes narrower and narrower and the trail runs through dense forests of oak, pine and juniper. We gain considerable altitude today and enjoy the views of the valley and the snow-covered peak of Chomolhari (7,326m). We camp in Soi Thangthanka (3,610m). Distance: 22 km, time approx. 7-8 hours. (F/M/A)

Day 7: Third Day Trekking Tour: From Soi Thangthangkha To Jangothang

The Paro River continues to lead us north today. We follow it and enter a wide valley with steep slopes and snow-covered peaks. We pass a few villages that live up here with their herds of yaks. The Chomolhari seems close enough to touch. After about five hours we reach our campsite in Jangothang (4,080m). Distance: 19 km, time approx. 5-6 hours. (F/M/A)

Day 8: Fourth Day Trekking Tour: Day Trip Or Rest Day

If you want to breathe air above 5,000 meters - today is your chance. Weโ€™ll go on a day trip and see how high we can get - maybe 5,000 or even 5,500 meters? If you want, you can use the day as a rest day at the camp. (F/M/A)

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Fifth Day Trekking Tour: From Jangothang To Yaktsa

After a short, steep climb at the start of todayโ€™s stage, we reach a glacial lake. From there we reach a hidden valley. During our hike we meet yak herders who live in tents woven from yak hair. After a second steep climb, we reach the Bonte La, a pass at an altitude of 4,890 meters. During our lunch break, we enjoy the sweeping view, in good weather all the way to Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak on our planet at 8,586 meters. A steep descent then takes us to the village of Soi Yaktsa (3,800m), where we set up camp. Distance 18km, time approx. 7-8 hours. (F/M/A)

  • Day 10 Day 10: Sixth Trekking Day: From Yaktsa To Thangbu
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 10: Sixth Trekking Day: From Yaktsa To Thangbu

Spectacular views accompany us throughout the day. First we ascend along the eastern side of the Soi Yaktsa valley. The higher we get, the more we can see the peaks of the main Himalayan range to the north. The peaks of Chomolhari and Jichu Drake appear on the horizon. We pass Takhung La at 4,520 meters and descend into the wide, grassy valley of Thangbushong. As on the previous days, we again pass the accommodation of yak herders. We leave this remote valley with a final steep ascent and reach Thombu La (4,380m). From here we can once again see the Paro Valley to the south and enjoy the all-round view of Bhutanโ€™s special mountain world for the last time. The descent then takes us back to Shana (2,860m), our first camping night. Distance 15km, time 6-7 hours. (F/M/A)

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 11: Seventh Trekking Day: From Shana Back To Paro

We descend southwards down the Paro Valley, following the river that we followed upstream a week ago. On the way into the valley, we make a detour to Gunitawa, a settlement where army personnel and their families live. We are picked up from the Drugyel Dzong and taken to the hotel. We enjoy a relaxing evening back in Bhutanese civilization. Distance 17km, time approx. 5 hours. Overnight stay in a hotel in Paro (F/M/A)

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 12: Paro / Drive To Thimphu And City Tour

To round off our trip today, we drive to Thimphu (2,320 m), the capital of Bhutan. On the 1.5-hour bus ride, we stop briefly at the Chuzom, the confluence of the Paro and Thimphu rivers, Bhutanโ€™s two largest rivers. Tibetan, Nepalese and Bhutanese stupas stand side by side here. Thimphu is the religious, cultural, economic and political center of Bhutan. It offers an unusual mix of a modern city and a traditional way of life. Although it is certainly not what you would expect from a national capital, there are still no traffic lights - but there is a Ministry of Happiness! After checking into the hotel, we go on a city tour. Overnight stay in Thimphu at the hotel (F/M/A)
