Itinerary of your trip Bilbao & San Sebastián City Break

  • Day 1 Day 1: Ongi Etorri In The Basque Country
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 1: Ongi Etorri In The Basque Country

Individual arrival to Bilbao. In the evening, your guide will welcome you for a short walk to the Basilica of Begoña, patron saint of the province of Bizkaia. Its religious significance and architectural beauty make it a cultural landmark. The basilica was built in the 16th century and is a place of pilgrimage for many people from Bilbao because of the Gothic image Amatxo. The tower of the basilica was used by sailors to arrive safely at the port. Afterwards, dine together at the hotel restaurant and get to know each other. (A)

  • Day 2 Day 2: Modern And Old Bilbao: Guggenheim Museum, Norman Foster’S Subway Stations And Old Town
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 2: Modern And Old Bilbao: Guggenheim Museum, Norman Foster’S Subway Stations And Old Town

On foot and by public transport, you will experience the city located on the Bay of Biscay during a guided city tour. Bilbao has long since exchanged the "gray industrial curtain" for a modern face of innovative architecture and extraordinary art. Probably the most spectacular building is the Guggenheim Museum designed by star architect Frank O. Gehry. You will get a glimpse of the modern and contemporary collection of nearly 10,000 works. Then walk along the Rio Nervión to the Norman Foster-designed subway stations, which feature functional design. A contrast to the new town is the historic center "Casco Viejo". You stroll to the central "Plaza Nueva", which marks the north of the old town, and to the famous cathedral. Next to it is the "Siete Calles" district, the oldest part of Bilbao’s old town. Down to the river are the "Seven Alleys", the popular bar district. Here on the riverbank you will also find the large indoor market "Mercado de la Ribera" (outside visit). Arrange the afternoon at your own pace. We recommend a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts with works by El Greco and Ribera. Alternatively, you can stroll through the oldest quarter of the city, "Siete Calles". This charming neighborhood is characterized by its historic architecture, narrow streets and lively atmosphere. • Day 3 Day 3: Elegant San Sebastián
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Elegant San Sebastián

On your day trip you will experience the beautiful city of San Sebastián, which was European Capital of Culture in 2016. It stretches along the famous semicircular bay "La Concha" with its white sand. In the 19th century, Donostia, as the city is called in Basque, was a popular summer residence of the royal court and was considered the secret summer capital of Spain. Today it still captivates with its elegant flair. Along the waterfront promenade you walk together to the harbor and into the old town. Here you will discover stylish buildings of the Belle Époque and the chessboard-like alleys with churches and the Plaza de la Constitución, which once served as a bullring. Tastefully landscaped squares and buildings can be found throughout the city. After your group tour of the city, you will have plenty of time to explore San Sebastián on your own. For example, stroll through the old town with the Alameda del Boulevard to do some shopping, and linger in one of the many pintxos bars to sample the culinary specialties. The bars pride themselves on their creative tapas. Alternatively, you can relax on the beach or walk up the house hill "Monte Urgull". On the hill there are ruins and remains of forts, fortifications and watchtowers built over the centuries. From here you will enjoy a fantastic view of the city and Concha Bay. Following your free time, you will return to your hotel. (F)

  • Day 4 Day 4: Unesco World Heritage Biscay Bridge, Las Arenas And Algorta
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Unesco World Heritage Biscay Bridge, Las Arenas And Algorta

In the morning you will travel together by subway to the small suburb of Portugalete, which impresses with its charming old town. Impressive is also the famous Puente de Viscaya (Biscay Bridge) with the oldest suspension ferry in the world and landmark of the industrial past. You will cross the iron suspension bridge by gondola or on foot. Enjoy the fantastic panoramic view of the Rio Nervión. Then walk along the river at the Paseo del Muelle through the village of Las Arenas. Here you will find stately villas and the monument in honor of Evaristo Churruca, a Spanish engineer who was responsible for the construction of the port of Bilbao. Enjoy the maritime atmosphere on the beautiful beach. Afterwards, drive to the picturesque fishing village of Algorta with its old harbor. The maritime style streets and houses have preserved the character of a typical Basque fishing village. The afternoon is at your leisure. Are you interested in art? Then we recommend the Basque Museum with a collection on the history and ethnography of the Basque Country. Alternatively, you can stroll through the alleys, browse in stores and linger in one of the cozy bars. You will end the evening together with your tour guide in a traditional pintxos restaurant in Bilbao. Pinxtos are a typical delicacy from the Basque Country, a kind of tapas. Cold and warm gourmet portions are served on small slices of white bread. (B/A)
